The International Cricket Council (ICC) officials, during a virtual meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday, are expected to finalize the hybrid model and announce the schedule for the Champions Trophy 2025. This landmark decision sets the stage for a thrilling tournament under unique circumstances.
Hybrid Model for India-Pakistan Matches
In principle, both India and Pakistan have agreed that neither team will travel to the other’s country for ICC tournaments. As a result, matches between India and Pakistan during the 2025 Champions Trophy will be held in Dubai. The tournament is scheduled from February 19 to March 9, 2025, with eight teams participating, divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.
Key Highlights of the ICC Meeting
- ICC Chairman Jay Shah is expected to join the meeting virtually from Brisbane.
- The hybrid model, although accepted, does not provide any financial compensation to PCB.
- ICC is likely to make an official announcement post-meeting.
Historical Context and Security Concerns
India has not toured Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup. While Pakistan visited India last year for the ODI World Cup, hopes for Team India’s participation in Pakistan for the Champions Trophy were dashed due to security concerns. PCB had to make adjustments to accommodate these realities.
